Thrown To The Lions

Consider the example, of the Romans throwing Christians to lions in the Coliseum. If enough cheering spectators derive great pleasure from this violent practice, are there any grounds on which a utilitarian could condemn it?

pls help me. what would you do if member of your family is been rendered to other country by force even though he has not done anything and he is been charged life sentence, a country where there is no justice but it is a country that we the north american suport, and he is holding a north american passport but his country is not taking very serious about his case ?.

it is obviously that they can get the feeling of pleasure by other ways instead of killing someone.their pleasure is less impornt than someone else'life,no matter how many they are.(forgive me my limited vocabulary)

  3. Barbara Bell says:

to michael: It depends on why your family member is being rendered elsewhere- is he/ she an illegal immigrant or, seeing as you mentioned life sentence, have they committed a crime of murder? If he is an asylum seeker, maybe he should go seek legal advice from an attorney? I don't know how the American justice system works but in England you get funding from the government to seek legal advice if your income is below a certain level..

  4. Noses Malone says:

It seems to me that the type of happiness derived from watching men being eaten alive by lions is thoroughly degrading, not only to the Christian but also to the bloodthirsty crowd. While the crowd may experience a momentary thrill, I imagine there is at least an inchoate sense within a majority of the members of the crowd of a collective loss of dignity. On balance, this loss of dignity would do more harm to the greater society than satisfying the crowd's fleeting bloodlust.

Maybe I am being idealistic, and this sense of indignity wasn't present in the Roman audience. John Stuart Mill might then assert that reveling in the Christian's being torn limb from limb is a lower preference, and therefore does not contribute to the greater good. Although I doubt he would have stepped into the Colosseum arena to appeal to the higher faculties of such an unforgiving crowd.

  5. Robert Carnival says:

The groud that can be for the Utilitarians is in any way pleasure can be got for humankind. Not just in one way or another. To give Romans their pleasure is to ruin the pleasure of the Christians. It's like death penalty exercise and surely should be condemned.

  6. Antonio M. Massa says:

It is difficult to give an answer to this question for what happened 2000 years ago. Pagans had different morality and Christians were considered followers of a new belief and morality doctrine.
In history we always find times where followers of new moral phylosphy are considered immoral and therefore punished by the actual Government…We are still fighting in USA about abortion or gay marriage or in some Middle East Countries have different way to implament morality.
Was not Galilei considered and condemed as heretic by the Catholic Church? Nowadays Galilei's theory would have probably 1000 Nobel.

  7. prandtl says:

There are obviously many reasons to condemn the act. I think the key is how an "utilitarian" condemns it in a way consistent with his ideology.

An argument an utilitarian can put forward is the following: 1. The moral rules are biological. The rules give the best chance for the human genes to survive. 2. The hypothetical scenario is not "useful" because it undermines our moral standard, which would in the long term leads to a way of living that has a worse chance to survive.
